The Spring Thing

The inaugural “Home Brew Forum Spring Thing” took place over the weekend of 13-14th May 2011 at the Church End Brewery,  Atherstone, Warwickshire.

Organised By Ian Wesley, Calum Craigie, and Jonathan Shaw, The event “a weekend of Craft Brewing” was a get together of Home Brew Forum members on the Friday night, a National Style Beer competition on the Saturday afternoon, followed by more sampling of the Church End Brewery’s beers on the Saturday night. The competition was judged by members of the NGWBJ and representatives of the Church End Brewery.

 Many of the Home Brew Forum members camped in the beer garden of the brewery from Friday to Sunday and were made to feel very welcome by the hosts at Church End Brewery. Members of the Home Brew Forum as well as quite a few CBA members, from all over the country attended the event . There were 84 entries received for the 7 competition classes. With Members of the Northern Craft Brewers members taking the honours in the Dry Stout and Lager Catagorys.

The results of the competition were as follows:-

Class 1 - Ordinary Bitter - Mick Houlden
Class 2 - Pale Ale / ESB - Allan Gayton (Midland Craft Brewers)
Class 3 - Continental Lager - Tony Barnsley (Northern Craft Brewers)
Class 4 - Dry Stout - Tom Yates (Northern Craft Brewers)
Class 5 - American Pale Ale - Steve Syson
Class 6 - Wheat Beer - Aled Murphy (Scottish Craft Brewers)
Class 7 - CEB Beer - Jonathan Scandrett
Best In Show : Jonathan Scandrett  for his entry in Class 7 wins a Cyclops Beer Profiling prize.

Tony Barnsley (Northern Craft Brewers) Winner Continental Lager

All the winners received £25 vouchers with second and third places taking £15 and £10 vouchers respectively. The sponsors of the event were Brew UK, Matchless, Craftbrewer, Barley Bottom, MaltMiller and Church End Brewery.
